A collection of sixteen early 20th-century apothecary jars by Whitall Tatum Company of Millville, New Jersey, one of America's foremost makers of pharmacy glass. Each jar with a gilded label-under-glass panel, reverse-painted by hand with crisp black lettering and linear flourishes.
The set includes seven larger jars, among them a taller bismuth jar with a sculptural pressed-glass stopper, and nine smaller tincture and fluid-extract bottles. All have their ground-glass stoppers. The Latin pharmaceutical labels include Lycopodium, Pot. Iodid., Pot. Chloras, Theobrom. Sod. Salic., Tr. Lavand. Co., Tr. Cinchon., and Tr. Cardam. Co., a small record of the pre-modern pharmacy. Grouped together, or individually, the jars make a striking display on open shelving, a bar, or a library cabinet.
