This exceptional Chinese Peking rug captures the restrained elegance typical of the early Republican period. The deeply saturated field, rendered in a near-midnight hue, is a masterful example of the sophisticated use of blue color rugs in East Asian weaving traditions, providing a dramatic backdrop for the delicate ornamentation.

Woven in luxurious wool, the rug's construction speaks to the high quality demanded by the international market of the 1920s. Its generous dimensions classify it among the most sought-after room size rugs, perfectly suited to anchor a formal living space or grand dining hall. The central field remains largely open, maximizing the visual impact of the rich blue tone and allowing the subtle sheen of the wool to catch the light.

The design is characterized by classical Chinese iconography, featuring scattered vases and small, stylized blossoms that emerge from the corners and center. The border work is particularly intricate, utilizing contrasting lighter blues and ivory accents to define the perimeter. This piece is a superb example within the category of floral rugs, where naturalistic elements are harmoniously balanced with geometric structure.

Dating from the 1920s, this piece represents a pivotal moment in textile history when traditional Chinese craftsmanship began incorporating subtle Western Art Deco influences. Its excellent condition and timeless palette ensure its status as a highly desirable acquisition for collectors of fine antique rugs seeking authenticity and enduring aesthetic value. See less
