A complementary pair of royal doulton lambeth stoneware ewers or handled jugs.
standing at a versatile 20 cm in height, this composed set beautifully showcases the organic, flowing lines of the late art nouveau movement. Each piece features an elegantly elongated, high-loop handle pulling gracefully down to a bulbous body.
both vessels are visually unified by their rich, high-gloss glazed necks and handles, executed in variegated tones of olive and sage green.
the individual bodies feature distinct, premium textual treatments that highlight the technical artistry of the turn-of-the-century lambeth studio:
the left jug: features the highly collectible "doulton & slaters patent" finish. Real lace fabric was pressed directly into the wet clay body during production to leave a deep, textile-like indentation. This granular net texture was subsequently highlighted in gold leaf and hand-enameled with vibrant white and green chrysanthemums.
the right jug: features a highly reflective, molded geometric pattern consisting of repeating concentric spirals. The entire stoneware body is coated in a richly gilded metallic gold lustre glaze, which mimics a warm brass or bronze finish. This shimmering metallic field provides a stunning contrast against the deep, organic reactive glaze pooling down the neck.
makers' marks & stamp details
the bare stoneware bases retain a complete, highly descriptive production roadmap confirming their authenticity and origin:
• the royal doulton backstamp (both pieces): both bases display the iconic impressed royal doulton lion and crown mark above a circular badge enclosing four interlocking "d" symbols. This mark was introduced in late 1901 to celebrate king edward vii granting a royal warrant to the factory, locking the production date of this pair strictly between 1902 and 1922.
• left jug stamps: features the auxiliary factory stamp "doulton & slaters patent" verifying the authentic lace-impressed technique. It is hand-incised with the design/pattern number x5287, stamped with the physical shape mold number 2489, and features the freehand decorator's monograms "re" and "1θ".
• right jug stamps: features the clean, impressed factory shape mold number 7646, a lowercase factory batch letter "a", and the hand-incised artist monogram "bw" belonging to the painter responsible for the variegated neck glaze.
condition report
both jugs are in excellent antique condition with superb structural integrity. Surface & glaze: the reactive salt glaze remains incredibly glossy, and both the gilding and metallic gold lustre show exceptionally minor, age-appropriate surface wear.
damage assessment: free from chips, hairline cracks, fleabites, or any post-production restorations to either the delicate spouts or the high-loop handles. This piece has an attribution mark,
