Rare full façade window element designed by Jean Prouvé and manufactured for the André-Argouges high school in Grenoble, France, 1965.
This example represents the glazed variant within the modular façade system developed by Prouvé for the school’s architecture. Conceived as a flexible and industrially rational solution, the system combined solid insulated panels, sliding window units, and fixed glazing elements such as this one. Each component could be mounted interchangeably within the façade grid, allowing the building envelope to respond directly to interior functions while maintaining a consistent architectural language. The construction of this window panel demonstrates Prouvé’s precise understanding of material logic and assembly. The frame is executed in aluminum, chosen for its strength, lightness, and resistance to corrosion, and shaped with softly rounded corners that echo the formal vocabulary of the entire system. The glass pane is set within the frame using a rubber gasket, a detail that ensures both insulation and flexibility, accommodating subtle movements between materials while maintaining a clean and uninterrupted surface. This technical solution reflects Prouvé’s ability to resolve structural, thermal, and aesthetic concerns within a single, highly refined gesture. Visually, the panel is reduced to its essence: a thin metal outline enclosing a plane of glass. The contrast between the aluminum frame and the darker inner gasket line introduces a subtle graphic quality, while the transparency of the glass adds depth and lightness. In the context of the original building, such elements contributed to a dynamic interplay between solid and void, opacity and openness. Removed from its architectural setting, the piece reveals itself as a remarkably minimal object, where every line and junction is carefully considered. It stands as a clear illustration of Prouvé’s genius, not through excess, but through reduction and precision, transforming a purely functional window into a timeless composition of structure, material, and proportion.
