A vintage Murano Sommerso glass conch shell sculpture by Alfredo Barbini, made in Italy during the 1970s, combining deep pink, cobalt blue, and purple glass in a stylized organic form. Handcrafted in substantial glass, the sculpture interprets the natural structure of a conch shell through a series of fluid, sculptural curves. A tightly spiraled tail extends into a rounded body that gradually opens upward and outward, culminating in a broad, splayed opening with a gently undulating rim. The simplified silhouette retains the recognizable characteristics of a marine shell while emphasizing the material's transparency, color, and sculptural qualities. The piece is executed in Sommerso glass, with a deep pink core surrounded by blue glass. As the layers twist and converge through the body, the overlapping colors produce varying shades of purple, creating subtle transitions between the saturated blue exterior and the softer pink interior. The thick glass walls reveal the relationship between these layers, while the polished surfaces reflect and refract light through the curved form. Particular attention is given to the shell's spiraled tail, where the glass gathers into a series of rounded, concentric folds. These dense, twisting elements contrast with the broader, more open body, creating a continuous movement from the compact terminal point to the expansive opening. The substantial glass construction and polished base allow the piece to function as a small freestanding decorative sculpture. Alfredo Barbini was an Italian glass designer and master glassmaker associated with the Murano glassmaking tradition. His work frequently explored the sculptural possibilities of glass through organic forms, substantial volumes, and carefully controlled color. This conch shell reflects that approach through its simplified naturalistic form and the interplay of layered Sommerso glass. The sculpture is in very good vintage condition, with minor surface wear to the body and polished base consistent with age and use. There are no chips or damage. Dimensions: Height 7 cm (2.76 in); width 13 cm (5.12 in); length 9.5 cm (3.74 in). This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
