In normal light, the glass appears almost black; when held against strong light, it reveals an intense deep ruby-red tone, giving the vase a particularly rich and atmospheric presence. The decoration shows a young gentleman in contemporary period dress pointing toward two birds. The motif can be read as a poetic symbol of affection, courtship and togetherness, especially fitting for a flower vase, where themes of nature, beauty and romance naturally meet. The white enamel “snow” painting is executed with remarkable delicacy and creates a beautiful contrast against the dark ruby glass. The vase is mouth-blown and hand-formed, with an expressive ruffled rim and a visible pontil mark to the underside. The body shows a small flattening/irregularity on the reverse, caused during the hot-forming process. This is a manufacturing characteristic of the hand-blown glass and not a damage. Very good antique condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. A refined example of late 19th to early 20th century Bohemian glasswork with strong decorative presence and unusually beautiful enamel work. See less
