In the foreground, a woman and a young boy are playing with a large dog, holding a mirror before it so that the animal looks at its own reflection. In the background, a girl is shown playing with a bird in a cage, adding another charming detail to the lively household scene.

The painting is rendered in a warm, subdued palette of browns, ochres and muted reds. The figures are set against a dark interior, with light entering through the window on the left and illuminating the central group. The combination of everyday domestic activity and carefully observed details is characteristic of Dutch genre painting of the period.

Painted in oil on canvas by an unidentified master, the painting was later relined onto a thick wooden panel and is presented in an attractive later gilt frame, which is younger than the painting. See less
