"Tiger" Figurine, Murano Glass, 20th Century – Murano, Italy
Tiger crafted from Murano glass using traditional hot glassmaking techniques. The figurine is modeled from glass paste, onto which successive layers of molten glass are added to define the volumes, shapes, and characteristic finish of the piece. The surface features a combination of tones and glass applications that stylistically reproduce the tiger's fur and stripes, integrated into the glass itself.
The renowned Murano glass was born, paradoxically, from a prohibition. Although Venice had been producing glass for centuries, in 1291 the Republic of Venice ordered all furnaces to be moved to Murano. The objective was twofold: to prevent fires in the city due to the high temperatures and to protect the secrets of the craft, ensuring that production remained concentrated exclusively on the island. Since then, Murano glass has been known as an exclusive, high-quality material.
