Rare pair of 1930s Czechoslovak armchairs attributed to Jindřich Halabala, featuring beautifully curved wooden armrests and sculptural upholstered backs. The chairs represent the transition between the decorative character of Art Deco and the streamlined approach of Czechoslovak Functionalism. Their sweeping wooden armrests, geometric upholstered bodies and compact proportions create a distinctive example of early modern Czechoslovak seating design. Both chairs retain their original orange patterned upholstery with contrasting piping and their original spring construction.
Designer: Jindřich Halabala Period: 1930s Origin: Czechoslovakia Style: Art Deco, Czechoslovak Functionalism, Modernism Set: Pair of 2 armchairs Dimensions – each chair: Height: 76 cm / 29.92 in Width: 64 cm / 25.20 in Depth: 74 cm / 29.13 in Seat height: 42 cm / 16.54 in Materials: Wood, textile upholstery, metal springs
Condition: Original unrestored condition with age-related wear. Both chairs require complete restoration. The upholstery shows substantial signs of age and use. Several original springs have come loose or fallen out, and the frames are loose and require structural attention. The underside photographs document the original spring construction and current condition. A compelling restoration project for collectors, designers or upholsterers seeking an authentic pair of early Czechoslovak modernist armchairs with strong Halabala character. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
