Beautiful antique porcelain pastoral figure depicting a charming shepherdess with a lamb, surrounded by an elaborate floral bocage and raised on an ornate Rococo-style scroll base. The figure features colorful polychrome decoration in pink, turquoise, green, white and gilt accents, with extensive applied floral and foliate details.
The underside bears an incised N and additional incised character/number, along with a pierced opening and visible firing/support marks. The marking and construction are consistent with features found on documented Derby porcelain figures, although the exact maker and date have not been conclusively established.
The figure is accompanied by an old paper reference/image that identifies a closely related Chelsea-Derby shepherdess model circa 1765. The pictured reference appears to represent a more elaborate variant of the same sculptural type, including additional candleholder elements and an instrument.
A particularly compelling decorative and research-worthy example for collectors of early English porcelain, Chelsea-Derby-style figures, Rococo decorative arts, and antique pastoral porcelain.
