The atmospheric woodland scene depicts traditional hunters gathered at night while preparing their carbide hunting lights near a stream. Before electric headlamps became common, carbide lamps were widely used by hunters for their bright acetylene flame, making this image an evocative piece of American sporting and outdoor history.

Cupp was a Missouri artist and longtime art director for Pittcraft Printing in Pittsburg, Kansas. An avid outdoorsman himself, he created Carbide Time as a nostalgic depiction of an earlier era of night hunting.

The print is presented under glass with wide, earthy-toned textured matting and a narrow contrasting inner border. It is finished in a purposefully distressed black frame that complements the dark, rustic woodland scene.

The “Paul Cupp 1972” mark visible at the lower left is printed as part of the original image rather than being a hand-applied signature.

A distinctive piece for a hunting lodge, cabin, study, den, sporting collection, or Americana-inspired or Ralph Lauren-inspired interior.
