Five turquoise-green faïence plates with scalloped rims, richly patterned borders, and distinct pictorial centers depicting sailing boats, landscapes, birds, and figures. Their saturated color unifies the collection, while each scene offers a different detail to discover.
Attributed to the Rubelles manufacture in France, the plates display the shaded decoration associated with émaux ombrants. Variations in translucent glaze depth create delicate contrasts of light and dark, lending the scenes an almost engraved appearance.
All five plates bear the impressed circular “BREVET D’INVENTION / A.D.T.” mark associated with Rubelles and Baron Alexis du Tremblay. The marks and decoration support a mid-nineteenth-century attribution, circa 1850.
An evocative collection for a dining-room plate wall, an antique dresser, or a cabinet of collected ceramics.
