The hollow molded construction retains hand-painted facial details and a flared lower edge pierced with multiple mounting holes, indicating the piece was originally worn or secured as part of a costume. Oversized papier-mâché character heads and masks of this type were used for carnivals, parades, theatrical performances, Halloween festivities, and community events during the early 20th century, where their exaggerated expressions could be easily seen from a distance. Its hand-formed construction, expressive caricature, and visible evidence of use give the piece a strong American folk art character.
