Victor Pasmore (British, 1908–1998)
Linear Development in One Movement, 1974
A quiet, deeply textured abstraction by Victor Pasmore, one of the pioneers of British modernism. Drawn boat and leaf-like forms drift across a warm olive-brown aquatint ground, anchored by a single dark stem and a ringed circle at the edge, very much in keeping with his lyrical 1970s work.
Original etching and aquatint on heavy wove paper, printed by White Ink Studio, London, and published by Marlborough Graphics in 1974 in an edition of 60 plus proofs (Bowness & Lambertini 42). Signed with the artist's "VP" monogram in pencil and bearing the White Ink blindstamp; undated and unnumbered. An impression is held by Tate, London.
Plate: 40 × 40 cm (approx. 15¾ × 15¾ in.)
Sheet: 71.0 × 60.6 cm (approx. 28 × 23⅞ in.), full margins
About the artist: Victor Pasmore was one of the pioneers of British abstract art. After making his name as a painter of landscapes and interiors, he turned to abstraction in the late 1940s and became a leading figure in the constructivist movement. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1960, and his later etchings and aquatints, many made after he moved to Malta, are known for their organic forms, drawn lines and deep, atmospheric tone.
Provenance: Ferguson Frame Gallery, Palm Desert, California.
