Antique Royal Staffordshire pottery Toby jug designed by Carruthers Gould and manufactured by Arthur J. Wilkinson in 1918. The figural vessel depicts Marshal Ferdinand Foch, Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied forces on the Western Front during World War I, seated in military uniform and holding a glass and bottle. Finely modeled details include Foch's distinctive mustache, decorated military cap, uniform insignia, tall boots, and a green bottle inscribed "Au Diable Le Kaiser." The circular base is embellished with raised and hand-colored heraldic and patriotic motifs, including fleur-de-lis, a lion, and rooster. Produced during the final year of World War I, the piece combines the traditional British Toby jug form with a historically specific military portrait.
