Tommaso Rivoli’s Soup, dating from the late 1990s, is a carefully executed homage to William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s celebrated 1865 painting of the same subject. The composition depicts a young girl seated at a table, holding a spoon above a bowl, and reproduces the intimate atmosphere and carefully observed figure characteristic of the academic painting tradition.
The young sitter is presented against a deep, dark background that strongly emphasises the luminous treatment of her face, arms and white blouse. The warm burgundy skirt provides a rich chromatic counterpoint, while the restrained palette and dramatic distribution of light give the composition a particularly intimate and atmospheric quality.
Rivoli pays particular attention to the modelling of the figure, with carefully defined facial features, hands and clothing contrasted against the darker surrounding areas. The subtle transitions of light across the skin and fabric contribute to the convincing sense of volume, while the simple domestic subject retains the quiet elegance associated with 19th-century academic painting.
The painting is signed “T. Rivoli” at lower left and is executed in oil on canvas. It is presented in a substantial carved and gilded wooden frame with classical ornamental mouldings and a richly worked decorative border. Measuring 102 × 102 cm overall, the framed work has a strong architectural presence that considerably enhances its decorative appeal.
The canvas measures 60 × 80 cm, while the overall framed dimensions are 102 × 102 × 6 cm.
The painting is presented in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with its period.
Dating from the late 1990s, Soup combines a traditional academic subject with Rivoli’s interpretation of one of Bouguereau’s recognised compositions. The strong contrast between the illuminated figure and dark background, together with the imposing giltwood frame, makes the work particularly effective in classical, traditional and eclectic interiors.
