Antique 19th-Century Italian Rococo Revival Hand-Carved Giltwood Wall Mirror
Made in Italy c.1850-1890.
Approx. 40" High x 24 1/2" Wide x 2 1/2-3" Deep.
An exceptional 19th-century Italian Rococo Revival openwork wall mirror, masterfully hand-carved from solid hardwood.
The frame exhibits classic Louis XV elegance, characterized by sweeping asymmetrical C-scrolls, fluid rocaille details, pierced foliate flourishes, and a prominent shell-and-scroll cartouche crest at the top.
The finish features traditional multi-layer water gilding over a thick, historic white gesso foundation.
A beautiful, authentic aged patina is present throughout, highlighting the warm pinkish-red clay bole undertones where the gold leaf has naturally rubbed and burnished over the last century.
The reverse side retains its original, flush-fitted multi-panel wooden backing board secured with period screws, indicating premium craftsmanship.
The mirror plate is clear and bright, providing excellent modern utility while perfectly complementing the historic frame.
Frame exhibits a complete cross-sectional hairline age-fracture running horizontally through the wood substrate at the top scroll crest. The crest remains attached but is structurally vulnerable and requires careful handling or professional stabilization.
Excellent antique condition. Minor hairline stable checking, small chips to the brittle gesso layer, and expected minor gold leaf flakes consistent with age and natural wood shrinkage. Natural rubbing to the gilding exposes the red bole foundation, creating a desirable antique patina. The mirror plate is clear with virtually no de-silvering or ghosting, suggesting a possible historical or modern replacement. Retains old twisted wire hanging hardware on the reverse. Replacement with modern heavy-duty wire is recommended prior to wall mounting.
