A Japanese cloisonne enamel vase from the Meiji period, attributed to the Honda school. Measuring 7 ½ inches tall, the vase has a rounded body, a slender neck and a gently flared mouth.
A dragon winds around the body, extending from its expressive face across the front and continuing around the sides and back. Its red mane, yellow brows, white scaled underside and sharply defined claws stand out against the rich reddish brown goldstone enamel. Fine, shimmering flecks throughout the ground give the surface depth and catch the light as the vase is turned.
The neck is decorated with a bird among flowers and scrolling foliage, bringing color and detail to the narrower upper section. A repeating ornamental border encircles the foot. The composition makes full use of the vase’s curved form: the dragon cannot be seen all at once, inviting the viewer to turn the piece to follow it.
Height: 7 ½ inches.
Condition: Good condition.
