On offer is an original, mid-century oil painting that tells a compelling story through its heavy texture, historical subject matter and the archival clues left on its reverse side.
THEME: The title written on the back, "Braceros at work," explicitly anchors this painting in a vital era of American agricultural history. Operating from 1942 to 1964 the Bracero Program was a bilateral agreement between the United States and Mexico which allowed millions of Mexican guest workers to come to the U.S. They were needed to fulfill severe labor shortages in agriculture and railroads during and after World War II. These workers were known as braceros, a word derived from the Spanish “brazo” meaning "arm"—essentially denoting strong manual laborers.
SETTING: The central valley of California, where Sacramento sits, was the heart of this program. The artwork captures these laborers stooped over low-growing crops, likely sugar beets, lettuce, or tomatoes, using the short-handled hoe. This notorious tool later banned in California because it forced workers into agonizing, permanent back-bending positions.
TECHNIQUE: The painting prominently utilizes the impasto technique. Using a palette knife or heavily loaded, stiff-bristled brushes the artist applied dense, multi-layered strokes giving the swirling green-sky and the fractured, muddy terrain a near-sculptural quality. This choice of technique isn’t just aesthetic; the rough, heavy texture visually reinforces the gritty, demanding reality of physical labor under the sun. The aggressive texture is meant to make you feel the heat, dust and physical toll of the labor.
ARTIST: The regional California artist Mildred Helen (Hanson) Smith was born in Astoria, Oregon on August 4, 1920. During the mid-20th century, she lived and painted in Sacramento, passing away June 14, 2012. Smith was known for her impressionistic and abstract expressionist landscape oil paintings. Her work frequently reflected mid-century modern aesthetic trends unique to California's post-war art scene.
DATE: The artist’s given address and phone number put the date of this work as completed between 1960-1964. The original pricing on the back ($65.00) indicates it was likely exhibited at a local gallery, art association show, or community fair. Adjusted for inflation from 1960, $65 would equal roughly $680 today, showing the artist valued it as a significant, substantial piece of work. The signatures on the lower right front ("M. Smith") and the back clearly establish its proud provenance as a poignant slice of California history.
