This exceptional example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving presents a sophisticated aesthetic typical of the Peking workshops. Its generous dimensions classify it among desirable room size rugs, making it an ideal anchor for a grand interior space.

The composition relies on a striking contrast between the luminous, expansive ivory color field and the saturated indigo blue used for the motifs and borders. This light ground allows the scattered, delicate sprays of blossoms and the central circular medallion to float weightlessly across the surface, creating an atmosphere of calm spaciousness.

The design is characterized by stylized, yet recognizable floral rugs patterns, including peonies and chrysanthemums, rendered in soft blue and subtle gold accents. The central medallion features intricate scrolling vines, mirroring the elegant corner spandrels, which are contained by a bold, multi-layered border system that includes a traditional Greek key meander.

Reflecting the refined taste of the Republican era, this piece is a testament to the enduring quality of Chinese weaving during the early modern period. It represents a significant acquisition for collectors seeking authentic antique rugs that blend traditional motifs with a distinctly modern, open sensibility. See less
