An extraordinary, highly architectural 19th-century sheet tin "Betty" grease lamp permanently integrated into a weighted saucer stand base. Custom-fabricated as a single, self-contained tabletop unit rather than a standard hanging lamp, this rare design eliminated the need for a separate "tidy" stand and provided exceptional stability and oil runoff protection on early American worktables. Craftsmanship of this quality—featuring fine pie-crust crimped detailing around the reservoir, intermediate drip cup, and saucer base—is characteristic of fine New England tin-smithing from the 1820s–1850s period.
Design Significance & Provenance: Dating to the second quarter of the 19th century, this sheet-tin Betty lamp represents a rare, integrated tabletop iteration of early American hearth lighting. Unlike common hanging examples, this piece was custom-fabricated as a unified architectural unit combining a hand-crimped saucer drip pan, weighted conical base, and D-shaped reservoir. It reflects the refined, functional metalwork of early New England tinsmiths.
Curator’s Note: With its exceptional sculptural height, permanent saucer silhouette, and rich original dark oxidation, this primitive tin Betty lamp serves as a striking focal point for rustic, early American, or modern primitive interiors. Perfect for styling atop a stacked antique blanket chest, mantelpiece, or dining sideboard.
Integrated Design: Purpose-built as a permanent one-piece unit with the Betty font soldered directly onto a central column and broad saucer base, preventing tip-overs and catching excess tallow/lard drips.
Reservoir & Wick: D-shaped sheet tin oil reservoir with a rear-hinged flat lid and a prominent wick spout. Inside, the font retains original historical carbonized lard/tallow residue and a original woven wick snippet.
Column & Handle: The reservoir sits atop a hand-rolled tubular tin stem supported by an arched sheet-tin strap handle running from the mid-column to the rear of the font. An intermediate crimped collar catches any stray oil drips above the main conical pedestal.
Base & Drip Pan: Rests on a heavy, weighted conical foot with a broad 5.25-inch crimped saucer base designed to balance the fixture during transport.
Origin & Age
Origin: United States (likely New England, Regional Tin-smith manufacture)
Age: Circa 1820–1850 (Early 19th Century)
Material: Hand-rolled and soldered Sheet Iron / Tinplate (Sheet Tin)
Authenticity Assessment
This piece demonstrates complete, period-correct bench marks for authentic 19th-century American sheet tin lighting. Magnified inspection of the construction reveals hand-cut metal edges, lapped longitudinal body seams, and hand-crimped pie-crust borders executed with manual crimping pliers rather than modern machine tooling. The solder joints show heavy, uneven lead-tin hand flow along the strap handle and column attachment points with period-appropriate oxidation. The dark patina across the tinplate displays authentic wear, surface oxidation, and micro-pitting consistent with 170+ years of age. The internal font contains genuine historical tallow/grease residue and carbonized fiber. There are no modern spot welds, wire-cut rivets, or modern machine-stamped seams anywhere on the assembly.
