VINTAGE THAI RECLINING BUDDHA / PARINIRVANA HOLLOW-CAST BRASS SCULPTURE
Substantial vintage Southeast Asian sculpture depicting the Buddha reclining peacefully with his head supported by his right hand. This traditional Buddhist pose is associated with Parinirvana, representing the Buddha's final passage into nirvana.
Attributed to Thailand and believed to date to the mid-20th century, approximately 1940s–1970s. The sculpture is constructed as a fully enclosed hollow casting in a non-magnetic copper-based metal, believed to be brass or a brass-rich copper alloy, and was hand-finished after casting.
The naturally aged surface displays warm gold and bronze tones with darker patination and areas of blue-green verdigris oxidation. Beautifully modeled details include downcast almond-shaped eyes, elongated earlobes, tightly curled hair, a serene facial expression, delicately rendered hands and feet, and deeply sculpted folds extending throughout the long monastic robe.
Close examination of the underside reveals extensive evidence of the traditional casting and hand-finishing process, including irregular surfaces, porosity, seams, fissures, grinding and tool marks, and apparent old casting corrections. No maker's mark, foundry stamp or signature was located.
