This piece is in nice overall condition and looks very good from all angles. When we acquired it, the varnish was discolored and flaking off, a large chip was missing from one of the legs, and it had no wheels. The chair was painstakingly hand sanded to remove the old varnish. It was then stained, and several coats of clear enamel were applied. The leg was repaired, and vintage metal caster wheels were installed. There are still some small blemishes present in the form of wear around the edges and some roughness of the enamel, mainly only on the front of the arms. Since so much time was spent looking at of the parts close up, it was determined that it is possibly a hybrid as the top portion has the WH Gunlocke Chair Co. label attached, but there were no examples found that have the same height adjustment mechanism with a wooden spindle (but it may be out there). If it is the piece that matches the seat then AI states the following: "this all-wood threaded spindle housing dates your Gunlocke banker's chair precisely between 1911 and 1917." Top to bottom conditions. The entire top portion is in very good condition with no damage or repairs. The backrest is fine overall. It is solid and the slats are all tight. The front looks excellent for the age, and the same is true for the back side. The arms do not move, and they are in fine shape with slight wear present. The seat is very nice front to back. There is one scratch near the right and some light wear; otherwise, all is good. The underside of the seat is as it should be with no damage or wear to be found. The wooden housing for the spindle is fine, and the spindle itself has two chipped off pieces. It still functions properly if the screw is not tightened in those spots. One of the center "hub" pieces is cracked (and repaired), and the others are in nice shape. The legs look good overall. The one with the broken off piece was repaired, and an attempt was made at matching the color. In some lighting conditions it is not noticed, and in others it is lighter. Somewhere along the way someone created a new leg and did a fine job. It looks like the rest, but it was noticed when looking up close since it has nearly no wear. The casters have some corrosion on the inside, one doesn't swivel as well as the others, and one falls out if the chair is lifted off the floor. The visible parts all look good, and they spin freely. Please see the pictures for further details.
