I was reflecting on the beauty and destruction of fire and decay in this season of Fall. My garden is full of so much life. One day a sunflower reaches for the sky and the next withers under the heat, dropping its seed in just the right places to be blanketed over again and prepared to create the next generation of life. The series, “L'Aiuola Bruciata (The Burnt Flower-Bed)”, takes on several meanings in looking at the elegance of beauty and the destruction of fire. In the philosophical, the political, and the intimately personal.

I am always looking at how items in nature rest together, in communication and resting alone. Evaluating the bend of a branch and the twist of a petal. From here I determine the texture on which my painting will rest. I texture each canvas by hand and plan how each color and form will rest on the ridges created by my knife. When painting on cotton paper, the surface offers a calming place for my painting and I focus on clean brush strokes and earthly warmth in the open space.

R.K. Red is an internationally collected artist with work visible in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Singapore. R.K. Red studied art at a small University in Minnesota, USA. Her education offered her the opportunity to study art throughout Europe with much of her time spent studying in Italy. Her work is largely inspired by the exploration of materials, colors and the natural world. Red lives with her daughter and husband in the San Francisco Bay Area. See less
