A beautiful German Louis XVI period commode, circa 1780, distinguished by its unusually graphic parquetry and finely carved architectural details. The case is veneered in warm cherrywood with delicate contrasting ribbon inlays of plum and maple, creating geometric panels across the façade, sides and top.
The commode features a distinctive recessed central section flanked by projecting drawer sections, giving the façade wonderful depth and architectural presence. Finely carved interlaced braid decoration runs along the corners and is repeated on the elegant tapered legs.
The richly figured top is particularly striking, composed of geometric panels framed with contrasting banding and centered by a small diamond motif. The sides are similarly finished, demonstrating the quality of the cabinetmaking from every angle.
Retaining its original lock and original brass mounts, the commode has a wonderful untouched character and warm, beautifully aged surface. The combination of cherrywood, plum and maple creates subtle tonal variation while allowing the intricate construction and parquetry to take center stage.
An exceptional late-18th-century German commode that works beautifully as a statement chest in either a traditional or contemporary interior.
