On offer is a near-faithful mid 20th-century copy of the famous mid 17th-century masterpiece titled “Peasants and Cattle by the River Merwede” (c. 1658–1660). The original was painted by the legendary Dutch Golden Age painter Aelbert Cuyp. Since that one belongs to the permanent collection of The National Gallery, London, this replica can convey something of the original’s charm in your home without an art-world-shaking museum break-in.
SUBJECT: This work replicates the classic Dutch landscape’s resting cows and the prominent horse and rider in the original’s exact positions. Likewise distant sailboats float precisely in place on the Merwede River against a luminous, sunlit sky. Even the clouds and grasses maintain their shapes and positions from the original. Where they differ is that instead of two male herders, we have three figures, a woman and two young people, suggesting the rider’s family.
ARTIST: This painting is a highly accomplished 20th-century decorative copy after Cuyp. The signature appears to read "J. Takacs." Several artists by the name of Takács (a common Hungarian surname) operated in Europe and the Americas during the 20th century specializing in traditional European landscape replication.
CONSTRUCTION: The back shows a tongue-and-groove multi-board wooden panel setting inside a heavy mitered frame. The coloration of the wood, the clean machine cut of the boards, as well as the specific style of staples/nails fixing the perimeter indicate standard mid-to-late 20th-century assembly.
CONDITION: The surface features uniform fine cracking (craquelure) and distressed elements. In professional copies from the 20th century, this was frequently achieved artificially using specialized fast-drying varnishes over slower-drying oil bases (creating shrinkage cracks) or applying dark washes into fine surface scoring to simulate centuries of smoke and dirt buildup.
FRAME: The sweeping, heavy swept-style frame features deliberate gold leaf distressing to resemble a worn 19th-century Barbizon or Rococo-revival frame. Nevertheless, this painting stands on its own for capturing the beauty of the original and recalling what made 17th-century Dutch painting still so revered today.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Lower right (photo #7). Image dimensions: 11.5 inches high x 15.5 inches wide.
