It is attributed to American artist William A. Carson (1867–1949) in a handwritten stretcher label that additionally identifies this scene as Yosemite National Park. Supporting this location is a barely legible penciled note upside down on the bottom stretcher that reads Yosemite, with the first letter a sweeping capital Y. Though the painting is unsigned, the stretcher label provides important provenance, preserving knowledge from a collector or dealer likely closer to the artist’s lifetime.

SUBJECT: Before roads and railways, pack trains supported California exploration, supplies, and wilderness tourism, bringing visitors to Yosemite by 1864. If painted by Carson in the 1920s or 1930s, the scene deliberately replaces Yosemite’s hotels, cars and roads already in place by then with a nostalgic frontier vision.

STYLE: Drawing on Luminism and the Hudson River School, the painting contrasts tiny figures with monumental nature and dramatic light. Carson’s typical romanticized valleys, rocky canyons, small figures, luminous skies, distant peaks and deep foreground shadows closely match this landscape.

ARTIST: Born in Pennsylvania and raised mainly in Colorado and Iowa, Carson was a self-taught artist with a natural gift for portraying the romantic scale of the American frontier. The artist’s Colorado childhood fostered a lifelong interest in Indigenous cultures, which he often used to evoke a vanished frontier. Carson traveled widely through the West, including Northern California, in the 1920s and 1930s. He spent the later years of his life in California painting the Pacific coast and national parks, including Yosemite.

FRAME & RELINING: A “Parks Custom Framing” label from San Jose confirms the painting’s West Coast preservation history. The canvas was relined—backed with a new support canvas—to strengthen it and stabilize age-related cracking or paint deterioration, leaving it still capable of delighting the viewer nearly a century later.
