Antique sèvres-style porcelain cup and saucer, france, c.1775
an elegant late-18th-century french porcelain cup and saucer, decorated in a rich blue ground with finely applied gilding and a delicately hand-painted portrait of a lady.
the cup features an oval portrait reserve framed in gilt ornament, while the deep blue ground and refined gold decoration give the set the luxurious character associated with sèvres porcelain of the louis xvi period.
both the cup and saucer bear interlaced “l” style marks to the base, associated with the historic sèvres manufactory. The decoration, colouring and refined proportions reflect the sophisticated french porcelain tradition for which sèvres became internationally celebrated during the 18th century.
the portrait is finely rendered in soft tones, depicting an elegantly dressed lady in the fashionable manner of the period. Combined with the rich blue ground and extensive gilding, the set has strong decorative presence despite its intimate scale.
a beautiful piece for a porcelain collection, cabinet display or layered classical interior.
