Painted on board with soft, impressionistic brushwork, the composition captures the character of Old Florida before the extensive development of the mid-20th century. Tall palms line the sandy shoreline while their reflections extend into the quiet blue-gray water. A hazy pastel sky in muted rose, lavender and blue gives the scene a wonderful sense of depth and early-morning Florida light.
Most importantly, the reverse retains a wonderful period handwritten inscription reading “Near Daytona Florida 1-9-29,” documenting both the location and the date of the work. This makes the painting considerably more interesting than an unidentified vintage Florida landscape.
Presented in its handsome period-style molded giltwood frame, which displays attractive age-related patina and wear.
The artist is presently unidentified; no visible signature has been located.
