This exceptional Chinese Art Deco piece captures the transitional aesthetic of the early 20th century, merging traditional Eastern motifs with the bold, minimalist sensibilities of the West. Its construction and design integrity confirm its status among the finest antique rugs produced during this highly influential period.

The rug's most arresting feature is its saturated, velvety field, rendered in a deep, regal shade of purple. This dramatic hue provides a stunning backdrop for the lighter, naturalistic elements of the border, making it a compelling choice for collectors seeking purple color rugs with genuine historical depth. The use of such a vibrant, singular color defines the Art Deco preference for impactful statements.

The design eschews traditional symmetry, instead featuring asymmetrical, cascading vines and stylized blossoms that spill elegantly from the neutral border onto the central field. These whimsical, naturalistic elements, including depictions of wisteria and chrysanthemums, solidify the rug's place within the category of sophisticated floral rugs, interpreted through a distinctly Chinese lens.

Measuring as a substantial room size rug, this textile is designed to anchor a major living space, providing both warmth and an unparalleled focal point of color and history. The quality of the wool knotting ensures a plush texture and lasting durability, characteristic of the fine craftsmanship prevalent in Shanghai workshops of the 1920s. See less
