This exceptional Chinese Peking piece represents the height of early 20th-century weaving, designed specifically to anchor a grand interior space. Its substantial dimensions classify it perfectly as a room size centerpiece, offering expansive coverage and sophisticated visual depth.

The central field is rendered in a magnificent, softly modulated ivory color, characteristic of the finest Peking production of the era. This expansive canvas is subtly overlaid with tone-on-tone geometric fretwork and auspicious cloud scrolls, creating a mesmerizing texture that shifts gently under ambient light. This restrained use of color highlights the rug's luxurious wool pile.

A striking contrast is achieved through the wide, deep indigo border, which frames the light field with dramatic definition. This border is richly decorated with scrolling vines and highly detailed stylized floral motifs, primarily peonies and chrysanthemums, executed in varying shades of blue and cream. The juxtaposition of the serene field and the vibrant border is a hallmark of this sophisticated style.

Woven from high-quality wool with meticulous knotting, this rug remains in remarkable condition, preserving the soft sheen and elegant drape sought after by collectors. As a prime example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving, it stands as a testament to enduring craftsmanship and is a highly desirable addition to any collection of fine antique rugs. See less
