A matched pair of twentieth-century Southeast Asian terracotta character busts, best catalogued within the Thai Ramakien and Khon-derived decorative tradition. The group comprises one serene crowned royal or celestial figure and one more dramatically modelled yaksha or asura-type guardian figure, each executed in reddish-brown fired earthenware with densely worked surface ornament.
The taller figure wears an elaborate pointed headdress rising above a composed face with finely modelled features. Applied-looking bosses, beaded borders, scrolling elements and crosshatched costume surfaces create a highly articulated sculptural treatment despite the compact scale.
The shorter figure presents a markedly different character, with bulging eyes, exposed fangs and an elaborate crown. These features correspond closely with the visual vocabulary traditionally associated with Thai demon or guardian figures in Ramakien and Khon imagery. The two pieces therefore function effectively as complementary character types rather than duplicate forms.
Both sculptures are moulded and hand-finished with incised and relief decoration. The reverse modelling indicates that they were conceived as complete decorative busts rather than surviving fragments of larger ancient figures. Their small scale and complete sculptural treatment are consistent with twentieth-century decorative or collectible interpretations of traditional Southeast Asian theatrical and guardian imagery.
