A beautifully crafted and cleverly designed Chinese wooden box, likely made of Huali (rosewood). The box features an ingenious expanding mechanism, utilizing metal hinges to stretch open from a compact rectangular shape into a multi-tiered display unit. The top surface is exquisitely decorated with intricate mother-of-pearl (shell) inlay, depicting a dynamic scene of a dragon and a phoenix amidst stylized clouds. The box also includes brass carrying handles on the sides. A unique and sophisticated piece for storing jewelry, seals, or other small treasures.
