A beautifully crafted Chinese hardwood box, likely made of Zitan wood, featuring deep relief carvings. The lid is intricately carved with a traditional "Lotus Pond in Autumn" motif, depicting mandarin ducks swimming amongst lotus leaves and flowers, accompanied by a famous classical poem in calligraphy. The front panel features a similar aquatic scene with ducks. The box is fitted with brass hardware including a front latch and side carrying handles, and opens to reveal a spacious, unlined interior. A wonderful storage piece for scholar's objects or treasures.
