A beautifully crafted and cleverly designed Chinese wooden box, likely made of Zitan wood. The box features an ingenious expanding mechanism, utilizing metal hinges to stretch open from a compact rectangular shape into a multi-tiered display unit. The top surface and side panels are exquisitely decorated with intricate mother-of-pearl (shell) inlay, depicting a vibrant scene of mandarin ducks swimming amongst lotus blossoms and foliage. The box also includes brass carrying handles on the sides. A unique and sophisticated piece for storing jewelry, seals, or other small treasures.
