Frosne’s intricate composition depicts the old Paris Hôtel de Ville surrounded by the names and coats of arms of the city’s governor, prévôt des marchands, and échevins. A winged figure sounds a trumpet above the building, while small figures animate the square below. The heraldic border makes this an unusually rich image of Parisian civic life.

Printing date unknown. Frosne engraved the original plate in 1653. This sheet is a later impression from the historic plate and bears the embossed MUSÉE DU LOUVRE • CHALCOGRAPHIE mark beneath the image. “J. Frosne sculpsit” appears within the engraved image. The Louvre’s workshop catalogs the plate as KM002819 and identifies its techniques as etching and burin.

The restrained blue, green, rose, and ochre coloring complements the engraved detail. The date of this particular impression, and the date and method of its coloring, have not been established.
