We came home from a house sale on Nantucket not long ago with some genuinely wonderful loot, and this one sat right at the top of the pile: a bartender's muddler from the Cambridge Glass Company, cut in the 1930s, out of an old island family's barware drawer.
Cambridge Glass, founded in Ohio in 1901, was the gold standard of American crystal through the Depression years, and this piece makes the case for itself. Clear, brilliant, weighted just right in the hand — a longer bartender's build than the standard muddler, with the extra reach to work a tall glass properly. Streamlined Art Deco geometry, smooth polished finish, refined enough to hand someone across a bar cart without apology. That line was built for exactly the cocktail renaissance that followed Prohibition, and it hasn't dated a day.
Bring it out for Old Fashioneds, Mint Juleps, Mojitos — anything that wants a proper muddle rather than a half-hearted stir. It's lovingly used, with all its original clarity and sparkle intact, and it carries a bit of island history along with it.
