We came home from a house sale on Nantucket not long ago with some genuinely wonderful loot, and this set sat right at the top of the pile: four cocktail muddlers from the Cambridge Glass Company, cut in the 1930s, out of an old island family's barware drawer.
Cambridge Glass, founded in Ohio in 1901, was the gold standard of American crystal through the Depression years, and this quartet makes the case for itself. Clear, brilliant, weighted just right in the hand — substantial enough to do real work on mint and sugar, refined enough to hand someone across a bar cart without apology. That streamlined Art Deco line was built for exactly the cocktail renaissance that followed Prohibition, and it hasn't dated a day. A full set of four means everyone at the party gets their own, no passing one muddler down the bar.
Bring them out for Old Fashioneds, Mint Juleps, Mojitos — anything that wants a proper muddle rather than a half-hearted stir. They're lovingly used, with all their original clarity and sparkle intact, and they carry a bit of island history along with them.
