An evocative vintage textile artwork signed “Masakis,” interpreting the celebrated Boxing Children fresco excavated at the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri on the Greek island of Thera—modern-day Santorini.
Rendered in the wax-resist batik technique, two youthful figures emerge through layered fields of terracotta, charcoal, ivory, taupe, and pale blue. Irregular dye blooms, fine linear crackling, and the visible woven ground give the work a tactile depth that cannot be achieved by a conventional print. These variations are inherent to the handmade batik process, in which selected areas of cloth are protected with wax during successive applications of dye.
The composition derives from the Bronze Age Boxers fresco, circa 1700 BCE. The original was recovered from Room B1 of Building Beta at Akrotiri and depicts two boys wearing belts and boxing gloves. The jewelry worn by the figure at left has been interpreted as a possible indication of rank or status. The ancient fresco is now held by the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
This vintage interpretation is signed “Masakis” at the lower right. Surviving collector accounts and secondary-market records associate the signature with Susan or Suzanna Masakis, née Lukomski, an American-born batik artist active between Southern California and Mykonos during the 1970s. Because published biographical documentation remains limited, the work is conservatively cataloged by its visible Masakis signature.
Presented beneath protective glazing with a warm ivory mat, narrow brown inner mat, and restrained black frame. The reverse retains its kraft-paper dust cover, hanging wire, and an Artworks framing label from Alexandria, Virginia. Ready to hang.
DESIGNER NOTES
This is the sort of artwork that gives a room the feeling of having been assembled over time rather than decorated all at once. Its combination of ancient Aegean imagery, 1970s textile craftsmanship, and earthy modernist color makes it especially compelling in a library, study, collected living room, or sophisticated coastal interior.
The composition has sufficient historical presence for a traditional or neoclassical room, while its simplified figures and graphic textile surface feel entirely at home with Mid-Century Modern, Organic Modern, Mediterranean, and contemporary furnishings. It would be particularly effective layered among antiquities, architectural fragments, travel collections, pottery, and other works on cloth.
Unlike a printed reproduction of an ancient image, this interpretation carries the physical irregularity of its medium. Wax-resist batik produces nuanced transitions and distinctive crackled passages, making the textile surface an essential part of the artwork.

The batik textile presents beautifully, with strong color and no visible tears, holes, unraveling, or fabric loss noted through the glazing. The mottled color, dye variations, and fine crackled lines are characteristics of the handmade wax-resist process and should not be interpreted as damage. The frame displays minor surface and edge wear consistent with age. The reverse kraft-paper dust cover has light rippling, handling wear, and a small puncture or abrasion. These are confined to the backing paper and do not appear to affect the artwork. Hanging wire remains installed. Please review all photographs, as they form part of the condition description. less
