Remarkable French Renaissance manuscript legal deed handwritten on parchment and precisely dated January 14, 1534, during the reign of King Francis I of France.
Written in early 16th-century French in brown ink on a single sheet of parchment, the document records an exchange involving Martin Beteau and the Seigneur de Petiteville.
An old handwritten annotation in the upper left margin reads in French: “14 janvier 1534 – Échange entre Martin Beteau et le Seigneur de Petiteville,” providing a particularly useful contemporary or early identification of the document.
The main text opens with an elaborate calligraphic formula beginning “Tous ceulx…”, followed by several densely written lines in characteristic Renaissance-period script. Decorative flourishes, enlarged lettering and manuscript signatures or notarial marks at the lower portion add considerable visual interest.
Petiteville was a historic seigneury in Normandy, in the present-day Eure department. Historical records document the Belleau family in connection with the seigneury during this period; Gilles de Belleau notably financed construction work at the nearby Saint-Gilles church in 1532.
The parchment displays all the character expected of a document approaching five centuries of age: old folds and creases, natural undulations, staining and discoloration, areas of faded ink and an irregular loss along the left edge. These elements are clearly visible in the photographs and form part of its authentic historical character.
Presented under glass in a later black and gilt frame.
A fascinating original Renaissance document and an exceptionally atmospheric decorative piece for a library, study, collection of manuscripts or historically inspired interior.
