Original French figurative ink and wash drawing by Marc Dumont (1940–2022), titled “Le Corbeau” (“The Raven”) or “Bain à Corbie” (“Bathing at Corbie”).
Executed in ink and wash on textured paper, the composition depicts two nude bathers resting beneath a striking row of mature trees along the water’s edge. In the foreground, a large raven emerges dramatically through the vegetation, creating an unusual narrative and almost dreamlike quality.
The finely rendered trees, foliage and figures reveal Dumont’s background as an illustrator, combining precise draftsmanship with an imaginative, storytelling approach.
The work is signed Dumont at the lower right.
Particularly interesting documentation survives on the reverse of the frame. A handwritten inscription identifies the artist, technique and title:
“Dumont Marc – Encre & lavis sur papier gros grain – Titre: ‘Le corbeau’ ou ‘Bain à Corbie’.”
A second label provides the narrative context:
“L’été à Corbie. À Corbie, au pays des trois rivières, lors d’une baignade, Bran le corbeau nous conta une histoire…”
and identifies the scene as an extract from “Naissance de la Caroline – Texte et illustrations de Marc Dumont.”
This documentation suggests that the drawing was created as an original illustration connected with one of Dumont’s own narrative projects.
Marc Dumont (1940–2022) is recorded by the auction house as having worked as an advertising illustrator for the Paris public transportation authority, the RATP.
Presented under glass in an elegant frame with a particularly attractive embossed leaf-pattern mat.
