Introduction

A beautifully decorative late 19th-century French bronze sculpture by **Auguste Moreau (1834-1917)** depicting a young flower girl.

Catalogue Note

The young figure stands with her head gently turned while carrying a flower basket from each hand.

The sculptor's treatment of her curling hair and softly arranged drapery creates movement across the compact composition.

The baskets extend to either side and establish a particularly attractive silhouette.

Natural variations within the bronze patina, including touches of verdigris, add depth and historic character to the surface.

Auguste Moreau

Auguste Moreau was a member of the prominent French Moreau family of sculptors.

Born in Dijon in 1834, he was the son of sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau and brother of Mathurin and Hippolyte Moreau.

He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1861 and became particularly associated with elegant figurative sculpture portraying women, children and pastoral or allegorical subjects.

Condition Report

Good antique condition consistent with age.

Natural surface wear, variations in patination and areas of verdigris are present. The underside displays the hollow-cast construction and central fixing.
