In the foreground, birds animate the scene, among them a crested bird perched on a branch and a heron at the water's edge, amid ferns and flowering plants. A narrow woven border frames the whole.

Verdure tapestries, named for their immersive greenery, were a celebrated specialty of the Aubusson and Flemish workshops from the seventeenth century onward. The genre has remained a decorator's favorite ever since for the warmth, depth and quiet sense of enclosure it brings to a room. At nearly six and a half feet wide, this example has the scale to anchor a dining room, library or stair hall, or to hang above a bed or sofa in place of a large painting.
