A statement piece from Ferguson Copeland, Ltd., the North Carolina maker known for hand-carved, hand-finished European reproduction furniture. This Louis XV–style armoire has an arched bonnet crown topped with a carved giltwood ribbon-and-swag crest. Below it are serpentine carved doors with gilt scrollwork and long pierced escutcheons, and it sits on a bombé chest base with gadrooned molding, cabriole legs, and carved scroll feet. The sides are fully carved and paneled, so it looks finished from every angle.
The finish is an antiqued cream paint with parcel-gilt highlights. The hand-rubbed distressing gives it the soft, time-worn look of a much older piece. The door interiors are hand-painted with trailing scroll vines in gold and soft blue, a detail most makers skip.
Inside the upper cabinet are shelves in a natural wood finish and two lower cubbies. It was built as a media cabinet, with a Furnlite illuminated furnishing wiring system: two interior accent lights at the top, a mounted three-outlet power strip, a coaxial cable pass-through, and rear cord access. It works equally well as a TV cabinet, linen press, bar, or wardrobe. The bombé base has three drawers with ornate foliate pulls, a carved center cartouche, and a working keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are lined in a rich mahogany-red finish, and the top drawer carries the brass Ferguson Copeland maker's plaque.
The original Ferguson Copeland label on the back identifies the piece as the Louis XV Armoire (Item 00011-05) in a custom finish, made circa 2003 in Morganton, North Carolina.
It's an easy fit for French, Hollywood Regency, or grandmillennial interiors, and it's a strong anchor piece for a primary bedroom, dressing room, or dining room.
Measurements (approximate, based on hand measuring):
94.5" H x 55" W x 24.5" D
Very good pre-owned condition. There are two small chips along the drawer edges of the bombé base, where the paint has come off and the raw wood shows through. One is on the right side of the middle drawer, and the other is on the carved molding of the center cartouche. The chips are minor and could be touched up with gilt or paint if desired. The rest of the edge rubbing and distressing is part of the original hand-applied finish. Interior lighting and outlets: working. Please see photos for close-up detail.
