This is an outstanding WWI cast‑iron military picture frame, dated 1917, featuring a highly detailed patriotic motif. The top displays an American eagle perched over a drum with flags flanking either side, and each side of the frame is decorated with crossed swords. The bottom shows crossed cannons with the date 1917 cast into the metal.
The frame retains its original glass, which has small air bubbles consistent with early 20th‑century hand‑rolled glass.
Inside is a period black‑and‑white portrait of a young serviceman, marked with a silver star on the photo. The back is inscribed “Waco Texas January 27 1918,” placing the image near Camp MacArthur, a major WWI training base. Silver stars were not official, but they were sometimes used informally by some studios and families to indicate wounded in action, decorated service, or special commendation.
Size: 6.5" x 9"
A rare and complete WWI display item—ideal for collectors of military history, patriotic memorabilia, or antique cast‑iron frames.
