The sitter wears an intricately ornamented black gown with embroidered sleeves, jeweled details and a traditional pleated ruff collar, rendered against a dark atmospheric background.

Inspired by the formal aristocratic portraiture of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, the painting has wonderful Old World presence. Particularly striking are the highly decorative costume details, from the scrolling embroidery and patterned mantle to the sitter's jewelry and carefully rendered lacework.
