SUBJECT: The front of the canvas reveals a lush, dark-manner composition rooted deeply in the 17th-century Dutch tradition, which heavily influenced late 19th-century American academic painters. A sliced, ribbed cantaloupe serves as the glowing center, flanked by incredibly rich, heavy clusters of dark purple and translucent green grapes. To the left, a mound of velvety peaches, plums and russet-green apples anchors the lower quadrant. A gnarled tree root winds down from the top right, accentuating a rustic, wild harvest feel.

Floating delicately in the scene are deep orange poppies at the top, a bird’s nest harboring three small speckled eggs at the bottom right, and highly detailed insects—including a grasshopper on the left, a butterfly atop the leaves, and a pale white moth nearing the nest. These additions are classic Dutch Vanitas symbols representing the fleeting, beautiful, and delicate cycle of nature.

FRAME: The frame itself is a substantial, custom period piece measuring over three feet tall (36.75" x 30.75"). It features a classic Victorian aesthetic with decorative, gilded corner and side scrollwork layered over a distinctive, muted blue-green painted channel inset. This color choice mirrors the cool undertones of the grape leaves and melon rind, binding the presentation together.

STRUCTURE: The rear of the frame confirms a textbook 19th-century origin. The canvas stretcher features an original wooden chassis with interlocking, mitered joints complete with wooden corner keys (wedges) intended to regulate canvas tension. The heavy linen weave visible on the reverse shows natural aging and patination consistent with late-1800s art supplies. The long, vertical white patch applied smoothly over the canvas back serves as a stable repair patch. It was seamlessly fixed to support a minor historic tear or paint fracture on the front face, successfully keeping the face of the melon and grapes preserved and structurally solid today.

ATTRIBUTION VERSO: A cursive penciled note on the wood stretcher reads "Attributed ~ (photo #10) alongside a paper tape reading "Cornelius Hankins" (photo #11). The highly celebrated Southern painter Cornelius Haly Hankins (1863–1946) studied under early Nashville art legends. While he became highly sought after for portraits across Richmond and Nashville, he was also widely noted for his rich, naturalistic landscapes and fruit-themed still lifes. Intriguingly, fragments of another old label remain at the bottom of the stretcher, showing "C. H." and a number. Possibily they refer to Cornelius Haly, with the last name Hankins torn away (photo #12).
