An original 1888 lithographic solar eclipse map from Edmund Weiss (1837–1917), published in Bilder-Atlas der Sternenwelt: Eine Astronomie für jedermann by J. F. Schreiber. Titled Karte der totalen Sonnenfinsternis am 19. August 1887, it charts the path of totality across Europe and Russia for the total solar eclipse of August 19, 1887.
The eclipse attracted unusual scientific attention because its shadow track ran largely over land, providing observation sites that several preceding eclipses had not. Among the observers was Dmitri Mendeleev, who ascended by balloon in Russia in an attempt to rise above the cloud cover and observe the eclipse from approximately 11,500 feet.
