The thick top extends over a deep apron, giving the table breadth and presence. Its walnut has acquired a beautiful patina over more than three centuries, with softened edges and a surface that is smooth and pleasing to the touch.
A deep drawer across the front is adorned with three drawer front panels fitted with original hand-forged iron pulls and escutcheons. These fittings have survived alongside the table for centuries, their dark iron beautifully accenting the warmth of the walnut. Four splayed legs support the top, joined below by a hand-forged wrought iron X-form stretcher.
The crossing rods are a defining feature of the design, giving the base stability while leaving the blacksmith’s work in full view. Such iron bracing is closely associated with Spanish country furniture, where skilled forging formed an essential part of the table’s construction and character.
With its useful drawers, generous surface and remarkable surviving ironwork, this is an authentic early table of uncommon beauty and everyday purpose.
