Thomas Philabaum Reptilian Series Iridescent Art Glass Vase - Signed - 8" H
About the Artist
Thomas Philabaum is an acclaimed American studio glass artist and an important figure in the American Studio Glass Movement. He studied at the University of Wisconsin under pioneering glass artist Harvey Littleton before establishing his own studio in Tucson, Arizona.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Philabaum has explored blown, cast, fused, and architectural glass. He is particularly recognized for his innovative use of surface treatments, iridescence, color, and texture, creating works that blur the distinction between functional vessel and sculpture.
About This Piece
This striking hand-blown vase is from Philabaum's distinctive Reptilian Series, one of the artist's most recognizable explorations of iridescent surface decoration.
The approximately 8-inch-high vessel features a classic ovoid form with gently tapering sides and a short flared rim. Its luminous surface shifts through brilliant shades of cobalt blue, turquoise, aqua, gold, violet, and copper, changing dramatically as the piece is viewed from different angles.
An intricate pulled-feather or fish-scale pattern spirals across the body, creating the organic, almost reptilian texture that gives the series its name. The combination of deeply saturated color and shimmering iridescence is particularly effective on this compact form. Signed near the base.
